Soldier or Scam Artist?
Twitter While it is true that some people successfully find good, lasting relationships on online dating sites, it is also true that many end up frustrated and disappointed. Also, a lot of men use very old pics. Sorry, but any picture older than years is irrelevant. Not that people are dishonest when they use an online dating site but there’s a disconnect — what they say doesn’t really match what they truly want. Kang Zhao, assistant professor of management sciences in UI’s College of Business, and UI doctoral student Xi Wang are part of a team that has developed an algorithm for dating sites that uses a person’s contact history to recommend partners with whom they may be more romantically compatible. Netflix model It’s similar to the model Netflix uses to recommend movies users might like by tracking their viewing history. Dating sites are taking notice. Zhao says he’s had preliminary discussions with two dating services who have expressed interest in learning more about the model. But lying about who you are — and your affections — solely to get access to someone else’s personally identifying information or money is a more dangerous form of catfishing not often highlighted by the show, and it’s on the rise just in time for Valentine’s Day. In fact, we might as well officially call this version of it “catphishing,” and add it to the growing roster of other notable phishing scams. The most famous catfishing victim, Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o , didn’t lose much more than his pride in his ordeal, but other victims haven’t been quite so lucky.
Former Denver Nuggets star Chris Anderson faced a criminal investigation after a woman pretended to be him online and scammed and blackmailed more than a dozen victims including a woman with whom he had a real-life relationship. As the Better Business Bureau has noted, these scams are on the rise in part because they don’t cost the scammers very much. According to a newly published OSI report on sextortion, it is not known how many DoD personnel have been victimized by this type of scam, though in November , the security team for Facebook identified a major sextortion ring operating out of the Philippines.
