Step Off the Jekyll and Hyde Rollercoaster: Ending Emotional Abuse
I first noticed Christian at my gym two years before I actually met him. He was tall, fit, and had a quiet bearing. Apparently, he had noticed me too, but neither of us did anything about it for two years. In the spring of , I walked into the back room of the gym to stretch and there he was sitting on the floor doing ab work. We goaded each other to take the weight-lifting class beginning in the studio — unbeknownst to me, that would make it his third hour in the gym for the day.
He asked me out to dinner after the class.
Dating will provide you with boring dates where you can’t wait to get out but also with ones that you would like to get somewhere. Both men and women actually go through the same emotions and process – although it could be argued women will over analyse slightly more (I should know, I’m one of them!).
SHARE We all go through millions of emotions in our relationship, and those emotions create brain chemicals that change the way we feel. Sometimes we are in a positive frame of mind hopefully most of the time , and other times we can be neutral or even having negative feelings about our partners and ourselves. Being able to trust your lover with your feelings is part of having a great relationship.
When you share something personal—perhaps that you are anxious about something at work—and your partner is supportive, it builds trust. It also gives you more strength to deal with whatever your issue is. However, if your partner puts you down or is unsupportive, it can make you choose to be less communicative about sharing what you are feeling, both now and in the future.
This is an unhealthy dynamic in any relationship and needs to be addressed to prevent damage or conflict. When conflicts do occur, look at how you are speaking to one another. Certain words can act as triggers for conflict, so both of you need to be careful to avoid saying things that may be offensive or may cause either of you to react negatively or to shut down. If you know that certain words or phrases upset your partner and will trigger a conflict, avoid saying them and learn to speak from your heart, not from a place of anger.
That can be as simple as making the commitment that you are going to be kinder to the person you are sharing your life with. One way to fulfill this new commitment is to make sure that you treat your partner better than you treat everyone else in your life, including other family members. This is not to say that you mistreat other people, but you need to make sure that your mate feels special from time to time.
Riding the Emotional Roller Coaster
Have you ever been in a relationship that has more downs than ups and unexpected twists and turns? I have, and it sucks. A relationship like this reminds me of being on a roller-coaster; it will leave you feeling dizzy, frustrated, confused and emotionally sick to your stomach. After I tried online dating, I was sure I would never admit to looking for a relationship online. But once I let go of them, I was able to see online dating as a significant asset in sobriety. Learning how to date sober was, like everything about sobriety, uncharted territory. If I felt the need for the hazy lubrication of alcohol during my regular life work, socializing, really anything , it would certainly be necessary for the potential emotional roller coaster that is dating!
By then I was comfortable going to a bar for an hour or two and sipping on seltzer while my date had a beer. Some guys were sweet, if a little confused: The interaction would proceed: And while I can tolerate hanging out in a bar, it will never be my first choice destination.
